Fantastic etymology by @susie_dent !
1🇬🇧Candidate/ 🇮🇹 candidato is a close relative of 🇮🇹 candido that means 'pure white', as Roman candidates dressed white togas
2 From the Latin 'ambire/ambulare' (to go about) we have 🇬🇧 ambition/ 🇮🇹 ambizione but also 🇬🇧 ambulance/ 🇮🇹 ambulanza
Etymology of the day: ‘ambition’ is from the Latin ‘ambire’, to ‘go about’. Roman candidates for election would walk the streets canvassing votes in their bid for office. They wore white togas to imply purity and integrity - ‘candidate’ is from ‘candidus’, ‘white’.
